When title designers started experimenting with the possibilities of animation this was an important step forward in the emergence of a new design discipline: motion graphic design. When animation entered the field of film title design, it opened the path for title sequence design to evolve into the art form it is today. Speed, timing and transformation all became part of a title designer's formal vocabulary. A new visual language emerged, and experimenting became part of the design process. New technologies and design methods were introduced, opening up a universe of new possibilities. Even today, there's still a lot left to explore. Motion design software is ever more sophisticated and easily available to anyone.
Few will disagree that Saul Bass's landmark main title designs (Anatomy of a Murder, Vertigo, North by Northwest) are among the best examples of the artistic potential of motion graphic design.
