Momoco created an abstract, almost austere opening title sequence for Hard Candy – a disturbing psychological thriller with an unconventional story. This candy is bittersweet. The red square, the clinical white spaces and the grids are fitting visual metaphors for the characters and themes of the film.
Ddesigner Nic Benns: “This sequence abstractly represents a scene in the movie where the girl searches the house for clues of a dead body. Here, the red square searches and exposes the cast and crew hidden behind invisible surfaces and walls – abstracted cupboards, curtains and a zen garden. The square moves in a slightly unnerving, naively confident way, in sympathy with the girl’s pychotic state of mind. The sequence also reflects the strong minimalism of the movie’s visual style. It’s a really peaceful sequence, which is good, because an hour later there were people fainting and walking out of the cinema due to the intense psychological terror!”
